Caffeine has been shown to improve various aspect of exercise performances. The present study suggests that caffeine may improve performance in the 800-m run performance. Since caffeine can stimulate breathing, we hypothesized that caffeine would promote hyperventilation occurring during exercise thereby reducing exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia, but no such effect was observed. The results of this study may contribute to the development of strategies to improve sports performance.
